Road To Wanderlust Film

North America

About the Project

Quick Summary: We need your help to turn hundreds of hours of inspiring footage from Sam & Raquel's 12-month adventure in the Peace Love Car into a short documentary submission for film festivals and a series of web episodes. If we hit our goal, additional funds will go toward the next generation of Peace Love Car – a custom ice cream truck!

What would it be like to live a life of true wanderlust?

A life where home is 28 square feet inside a 1988 Ford Festiva, and your days are filled with travel, teaching, and spectacular adventures. Meet Sam Salwei, Raquel Hernandez, and the Peace Love Car – two charmingly talented wanderers and their trusty (if quirky) steed.

Sam is a veteran adventurer of many talents:  rock climber, slackliner, adventure videographer, snowkiter, co-founder of YogaSlackers, acrobat and yogi. Raquel is his muse, a former marine biologist, turned yogini who joined Sam two years ago to help him teach slacklining and acroyoga– and above all, to explore the world together!

The Peace Love Car is one-of-a-kind. A solar panel on the roof provides power for the fridge, the seats fold down into a bed, and the oven under the hood can cook you a perfect burrito. It custom-built shocks bear 1,500lbs of adventure gear with nary a squeak (OK, not true), and it has transported its occupants with moderate reliability across 450,000+ miles of open road.

But friends, the Peace Love Car is dying.

Last year a mechanic declared that, due to a rusting unibody, the PLC had only 12 months to live. As a final farewell, Sam and Raquel took the vehicle on a 45,000-mile tour of North America, crossing the continent 7 times and visiting all 49 states and most of Canada. Along the way they met an array amazing people and pushed their bodies (and relationship) to the limits in some of the most beautiful locations on Earth.

----------

Here’s the thing – they filmed all of it.

Hi! This is Ben Fullerton, Director, Editor and Composer for the project and a member of the Boulder, CO based Caveman Collective. I first stumbled upon this incredible story and the people that live it a few years ago. I’ve wanted to make a documentary about their life for a while, but when I found out that they were going on this 50 state tour, and that they were already filming some of it, I knew the time was now!

So here’s where we need your help. We have a unique opportunity to:

1) Create an inspiring film about what it is actually like to live a life of wanderlust.

Throughout their 12-month odyssey, Sam and Raquel took hundreds of hours of spectacular footage. They filmed themselves completing intense athletic feats such running the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim (50 grueling miles that are hard even when you aren't filming yourself), discovering the wisdom and friendship of strangers, and generally documenting the highs and lows of their life on the road – cooking on picnic tables, showering under foot wash faucets, and trying to keep a sane romantic relationship while constantly on the move. And Caveman Collective and I have been strategically meeting up with them to bring our outside perspective to interviews and bring as much productions value as we can to their epic shenanigans– like AcroYoga in front of the iconic Maroon Bells and mountain biking in the verdant Salt Lake City Mountains.

This is a tale of a true adventure about a lifestyle considered impossible to some and inspirational to all!

2) Memorialize the Peace Love Car for all time

The PLC has touched thousands of lives, but – alas – will drive no more. With this film, the PLC can continue to inspire people with the notion that limited resources need not limit what is possible. If you are creative enough, “home” can be a small pod on four wheels. The memory of this crazy creation need not rust away with its frame.

3) Fund the next generation of the Peace Love Car

Sam and Raquel just purchased the next generation of the Peace Love Car – and old-school ice cream truck. Yes, you read that right.

If we exceed our $25,000 goal for film production, some additional funds will go toward increasing the quality of the final product and bringing you additional content, but also making the new PLC as awesome as the last one, to ensure that Sam and Raquel can embark on (and film) yet another wild adventure. And as Kickstarter supporters you’ll have a lot of say in what that adventure looks like!

Here’s what we need your help to accomplish.

Most of the video have already been captured by Sam, Raquel and Caveman Collective, and this has the potential to be a powerful film the celebrates spirit of adventure and will inspire others to live their own best life. But there is still some pick up shooting left to do, and editing that much footage is a gargantuan task. We want to be able to really take the time needed in Post Production to go through it all with a fine tooth comb, find all the best moments, and really craft the most engaging, inspiring story that we can. We also need funds to pay for motion graphics to spice up the experience, and spend the time on an originally composed score to sweeten the mood; as well as to increase the production value of the entire film with expert color grading, mixing and mastering. Coming in contact with Sam, Raquel and the Peace Love Car has had a big effect on my life and so many others, and this project is all about spreading that effect as far and wide as possible!

With your financial support the Road to Wanderlust will be:

  • Professionally produced into single short documentary to be submitted to film festivals.

  • That will be broken out and developed into a web-based video series, with 5 main episodes + many highly entertaining and informative “shorts” – including adventure footage, how-to content (you’d be amazed at some of the things Sam & Raquel are experts on!), and candid adorkable moments.

  • Carried on in the form of the Peace Love Car II – with the opportunity to help shape the next adventure, and if we raise enough funding, get to work on Season 2 of the Road To Wanderlust!

As a supporter you will:

Ensure that Sam and Raquel’s story inspires tens of thousands of people to live more connected, thoughtful, passionate, adventurous lives
