Lyimo Expeditions Kilimanjaro Conservation & Forest Resource Management Program

Marangu-Moshi, Kilimanjaro - Tanzania

About the Project

Background Information:

Forest Sector is very important in the wellbeing of majority of Tanzanians both who are living in rural and urban areas. Forests and its environment is playing a vital role in provision of life to many fauna and flora. Forest is the bank for the needs of living things. From forest we get energy, meals, medicine, water, source of rain, source of fresh oxygen, filter of pollutants and many others.  Therefore, forest has been a very strategic source of income, energy and serves millions of fauna and flora whole over the world.

Forest sector is the catalyst for economic development to Tanzania and its people. Recently, at massive level, Forest resources had been invaded by human being and threatening their flourishing This is due to the fact that, man has misbehaved in utilizing this precious resource. This reason motivated Lyimo Expedition as among its social responsibility, to prepare this concept note/ proposal to support recovering the lost forests. As stakeholder in tourism industry, we would like to attracted efforts from different parts of the world to join our efforts in supporting recovering of the destroyed forests as well as setting sustainable mechanism which would b e the yardstick for conservation of forest resources in Tanzania.

The conservation and Forest resources management Project will be implemented in Marangu West and East wards, Moshi Rural District. The program if successful will be implemented in eight villages adjacent to Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA). In Tanzania Forestry industry, there has been many challenges in conservation and protection of the ecosystem. Human activities and climate changes lead to the massive distortion of forest resources whole over Tanzania. Extra measures are needed to rectify the situation by recovering the destroyed resources via the strategic implementation of the Conservation projects. Aspiration

In Kilimanjaro Region, we managed to have some studies, which identified the extent of destruction of the Natural Forest around Mount Kilimanjaro as well as local residence. The destruction is a result of unawareness of the community members, negligence, poor governance, population increase, lack of conservation education and global warming issues. The destruction of Kilimanjaro forest and people’s environment, have been contributed by unfaithful adjacent communities who are practicing illegal activities in the forest such as lumbering, firewood collection/ charcoal, grazing, bee keeping, wild fires and poaching.

Therefore, we opt to take this chance to join your efforts in conservation if forest resources in the wards of Marangu west and East where the destruction is massive and is still going on without intensive measures to stop it.

Many forests in Tanzania both Natural and planted are in danger to disappear due to the current needs of forest products such as charcoal, timbers, medicine, wild fires, mineral extraction, grazing, poaching, bee keeping and farming. In and out of Tanzania (Logs other forest product), A-Z, Carving, drying of tobacco.

  • Population Increase.

The growing population around forest /conserved areas in Tanzania is increasing rapidly, while resources available not accommodating them. Therefore this factor leads to high demand of forest products and areas for residence. This is a big challenge that should be addressed urgently so as rescue the sustainability of Forests in Tanzania. Measurer that should be taken is Proper policies in forest resource management, which will prevent community members to utilize the resources responsively and lead to degradation. In this Case, alternative residential areas should be developed so as to accommodate the growing population as well as their socio-economic needs. For Instance, improvement of all infrastructures and establishment o micro-economic activities, which will enable the growing population accessing their urgent, needs, and keep them busy.

There is a need of building capacities of the community members by rising awareness of the importance of conservation in their daily lives and for the future generation. The capacity building activity shall go hand in hand with advocating alternative source of energy, forest rehabilitation and management through collective efforts and security.

  • Climate Change

This involves natural factors and human activities have contributed much in degradation of forest and environment at large. The fact here is that the climatic change is contributed much with human activities through pollution of all kinds that lead to abnormal weather conditions hence disappearance of some species as well as season of the year change. Therefore, we need to involve different institutions and communities effectively in the struggles to rescue our forests. Different documentaries and information are realizing the impact of climate change to forest.

We are in need to work collaboratively with other institutions, which would assist in securing this burning issue. There should be some regulations where the most polluting activities to be abolished. The activities are such emissions o green house gases such as Carbon dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur dioxide and other Chlorofluorocarbons which depletes the ozone Layer and then results in to air pollution, land pollution as well as water pollution. Pollution always causes unpleasant conditions to both fauna and flora, where many disappear, as the conditions not favor their flourishiments. Though this problem is very complex as it involve many factors and nation especially the industrialized one, we need to implement the programby planting many trees in our forests, residences, and advocate the use of affordable renewable energy as source of energy to the households nearby the forest reserves. Renewable energy is such as solar power and biogas.

  • Severe drought.

This has been evidenced in Kilimanjaro, Manyara. Arusha, Morogoro, Dodoma, Singida and Shinyanga regions where it leads to poor productivity, diseases such as Malaria, Loss of water, disappearance of some species, lower National Income, vanishing of glaciers of mount Kilimanjaro, rise in temperate to 37 ° C. In order to rectify the situation, the program should work hard so as to enable communities are aware of their ultimate role in overcoming drought occurrence. Planting environmental friendly trees, Proper agriculture methods, and protection of water sources, proper water resource Management and planning.

  • Poor Governance and Conservation Forest Resources.

There has been negligence is supervising proper conservation and forest resource in Tanzania particularly in Kilimanjaro. This negligence leads to the clearance natural forests and reserved areas. There had been negligence in some areas where local government authorities and other related institutions failed to take their responsibilities in protecting forest resources. This had been revealed in many areas of Tanzania where many forests were cleared.

  • The problem here is corruption, irresponsibility and selfishness of some forest officers.

local government especially from District to Village Level. The Authorities, which are responsible for issuing Licenses for forests, harvesting illegally or without proper permits requirements, lead to massive harvesting of forests with very slow reforestation pace. Now we are in need to inform them the importance of accountability on the position they are holding so as to secure our forest resources.

The point here is that, If they will be effective and manage the policies and regulations governing forest resources and environment at large, community will support these efforts. But reciprocally, they are collaborating with some community members in destruction and this had lead to high speed in forest clearance. The program will conduct social Audit via Community scorecards as the way to draw perspectives of the community members for proper environmental conservation and forest resource management.

  • Poor Periodic and Effective Monitoring.

Seemed to affect forest resources in many areas in Tanzania accelerated massive destruction of the Natural, artificial and woodland forests. We have vivid examples from Kilimanjaro particularly in the wards of Marangu East and West. When you stand outside the Kilimanjaro National Park Forest which were covered with big are seen destroyed. The Natural vegetation of the mountain has gone due to human activities. Small shrubs are seen from to take a large part of the forest. Why this is happening? Is it because of irresponsible authorities or Community? We need to find immediate solutions to overcome this adverse situation to the recovery of the snows of Kilimanjaro as well as the Natural Vegetation. Refer to the photos below.

Photo (i): This is a part of destroyed Natural Forest of Kilimanjaro with as section on Mount Mawenzi which is among the three peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, the photos were taken in November 2013, nearby the borders of the forest and residence of adjacent communities (Komela Village)

Photo (ii): This is a part of destroyed Natural Forest of Kilimanjaro with as section on Mount Kibo which is among the three peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, the photo were taken in November 2013, nearby the borders of the forest and residence of adjacent communities (Komela Village

Photo (iii): The View of Mount Kilimanjaro (Kibo and Mawenze) in September 2012 as seen at Small Town of Himo/Njia Panda. Tree planting in these areas has been like taboos, which is why it is seen bare land without tries. This situation in leading to the prevailing severe drought, massive vanishing of the glaciers of mounts Kilimanjaro, high temperatures which reached up to 37 C in February 2013.

From the above photos, we are witnessing the level of destruction of the Natural forest and danger ahead, which needs immediate strategic measures to solve it. Both short term and long-term strategies are very much needed to overcome the situation.

Previously we had a very thick vegetation cover when stand in this area. It was not easy to penetrate your eyes to see bare Kilimanjaro without crossing your eyes over big Acaranga species, Keshia tries, facus,Eat African Yellow woods, Hagenia Abyssinica , East African rose woods,  Albizia trees species, Talamontana tree Wild Mangos Abernaemontana Ventricosa, Trichilia emetic ,  Prunus Africana etc. There are many dried   non – stop streams of water, which were the backbone for many species, and residents of Kilimanjaro from the highland to the lowland. The flourished streams from every corner of the area do no longer exist, and if they exist are periodically during wet seasons. But now what is happening? May be population increase? An employment? Pouching? People are not aware of the danger ahead? What will be the next step after this massive destruction? Where are the responsible organs/ Institutions? We will get some answers of these questions via this viable project proposal.

Target/Mission:

Having responsive community with thorough forest resource management and having conserved and sustainable environment for the well being of the current and future generation.

Area:

Villages where the project will be implemented: Kitowo, Kiraracha, Komalyangoe, Komela, Mbahe (Marangu West) and Arisi, Lyasongoro and Mshiri Marangu East Stability of the forest will contribute to 40%++ recovery of the snows of mount Kilimanjaro. The project should be implemented in all communities adjacent to Kilimanjaro National Park, and the low land areas, where tree planting campaign should be like a breath to every individual owning a peace of land, Institutions, and we will also request KINAPA develop linked to all environmental conservation organs and the prisons to support replanting the tries with collaboration with all community members. There should be a slogan from the Regional to family Level and every individual member should take it as a daily routine (strategies in implementation).

Moving Forward:

We are expecting after phase out of the project, we will adopt the same workforce to other danger areas in Tanzania. We will also making some periodic visits of the projects we established and provide capacity building skills to the community-based facilitators. Lyimo expedition via its conservation program, is expecting to replicate the sustainable conservation program in all Districts of Kilimanjaro region and the nearby regions. We are very positive that together we can recover the mountain and its surrounding for the sustainability of tourism and economy of the country.
